January is an exciting time for Real Tennis in Australia, attracting visitors from around the world to watch and experience all festivals of tennis. The international Real Tennis year kicks off in Hobart on 6th January with the both the Men’s and Women’s Australian Open. Guests will be invited to a reception at Government House, held by Her Excellency the Governor on Tuesday 7th January. 2025 will also see the Hobart Real Tennis Club celebrate its sesquicentenary (150th) with a dinner to be held on Saturday 11th January at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania.
While the game has a relatively small following compared to many other sports, its players and followers are invariably interested in quality products and experiences.
There is strong interest in the sport throughout the UK, in the north-east of the United States, where there are clubs in the major cities, in Paris and Bordeaux, and in Melbourne and Sydney. The Sydney Real Tennis Club has recently announced its intention to build a new court at Cheltenham.
Hobart and the Hobart Real Tennis Club enjoys a prestigious international reputation. Built in 1875, it was the first real tennis club established in Australia, and thus the oldest tennis club in the southern hemisphere. The club premises and tennis court at 45 Davey Street are a collection of unique heritage buildings, and its location opposite St David’s Park and close to the Salamanca precinct, make it a special place for followers of real tennis to visit.
